Black Campus Progressives is a student organization at Hampton University which has been founded for the purpose of uniting the student body in order to peacefully advance towards progressive change.
Black Campus Progressives takes flourishing leaders and lets them make affective change on their campus and within the community. Our objective is to begin with a hands-on learning experience, providing an environment in which students can mindfully look at the past, promote awareness of history and culture while dissecting social issues. In this organization students not only discuss current events, social reforms, political and governmental systems but have a place where they can actively respond.
The organization is an outlet for students to talk and influence each other outside the classroom setting by promoting a comfortable and open minded environment to discuss social issues, whether they be local or global; students are encouraged to independently think in a place for open dialogue about these situations. Black Campus Progressives seek to nourish Hampton University students with knowledge and provide an environment where they become activists and participate in nationwide progressive movements.
We believe, it is up to the youth to reshape the image of our world, future, and lives. Our goal is to find our place in the progressive movement, in order to fulfill our goals and objectives. We intend to reach the masses. The more students involved, the more ideas and more plans we can develop to go out into the community and reach the people to make a united step toward progression.
A second purpose, for which we have already been granted money, is the publication of a progressive news-magazine. This outlet to reach the massive of people in our environment will promote more awareness of social issues, and transmit less recognized information on current events, helping students form more knowledgeable opinions and make more conscious decisions. We will also try to bring in experts on social issues and have different forums on campus that promote awareness to aid these goals. Just as with all progression in the past, the accomplishment of our goals in this organization will come with hard work, dedication, and unity.
The structure of BCP will include a board committee consisting of a president, vice-president, proletarian/meeting facilitator, secretary, treasurer, media coordinator, and four other board members who will assist in coordinating activities. There will also then be the general student members of the organizations. BCP will have weekly meetings where we have a set topic which students have chosen, researched, and be prepared to discuss. We will attend certain events in the community, have a book club, publish the news-magazine, and hold forums with professional speakers as well.
The role of BCP’s advisor will be to oversee all the actions of the group. Most of the decision making will come from the collective student population, however the advisor will oversee the actions of the group. The advisor will attend meetings to help facilitate and also help organize functions.
Change will come about from the average citizens. Therefore this organization is open to the entire student population and individuals need no certain criteria to join, unless they wish to become board members.
